CONFIRMATION

Goal

Our Confirmation program provides students with the tools they need to live in the world as practicing Christians. The choices we make, the options we choose, the values we hold are shaped by our understanding of what it means to live as a disciple of Jesus in community with other disciples. These values and understandings of discipleship merge together in what we call practices of faith. We practice our faith like we practice our part for a play or a baseball game, or a delicate surgery. Practice implies an ongoing attempt at living the life of faith and growing more deeply in our love of God and each other. Each student will explore various practices of faith individually, in class discussions and by working with a Mentor. At the completion of the course, our Confirmands will have become familiar with a variety of ways in which people practice faithful living in "real time."

Leaders

The Confirmation class is led by Pastor Jeff and Marge Baltz with the assistance of Mentors from the Congregation.

Who is Confirmation for?

Confirmation is open to students entering the eighth through the twelfth grades.

What is a Mentor?

Mentors are selected by students. If a student doesn’t have an idea for whom they would like to ask, we will make suggestions. Mentors are adults who are not a relative of the student and who are not the parent of another student currently in the Confirmation Class. Mentors should attend worship regularly, or be willing to make that commitment to their Confirmation student that they will do so for the duration of Confirmation. Mentors must complete the safe church volunteer program as practiced at St. John’s. Confirmands and mentors will decide on a day and time to meet to do their work together.

Resources

Students will be provided with the book "Way to Live: Christian Practices for Teens". During the course of the year, the Confirmand and mentor will explore each of the practices in the book. Students will be asked to discuss how they live out the practices in their life with their mentors and mentors will be expected to share the practices they have found important in their own lives.

Please do not hesitate to contact the Church Office at 610-759-0893 for more information about future participation. Thank you!
